Brief history of the Network

In 1961, a young, energetic law student made history by establishing DZYG – am 1330 khz, the first radio broadcasting station in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija - the flagship of Vanguard Radio Network.

In 1969, Mr. Manuel “Nonong” Galvez, Jr., son of the late Col. Manuel E. Galvez of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, simultaneously established DZXO-am, formerely DZYG in Cabanatuan City and DWMG-am in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya, both of which are pioneers in Radio Broadcasting in the said provinces.

True to its name, Vanguard Radio Network spearheaded the way in establishing the first FM station BiG Sound DWMG 101.5 in Cabanatuan City in 1981, the first FM station BiG Sound DWAA 105.5 in San Fernando, La Union in 1983, BiG Sound DWWC 95.3 Cauayan, Isabela, BiG Sound DWDC 101.3 Solano, Nueva Vizcaya, BiG Sound DWXY 100.5 Tuguegarao, Cagayan in 1988; BiG Sound DWNG 97.5 Lucena City in 1997 (the 1st fully-computerized radio station in Southern Tagalog); and BiG Sound DWBG 95.9 Baguio City in 1994, which was eventually transformed to UHF Ch. 24 in 2007, the first community television station in that city.

Vanguard Radio Network is one of the original co-founders of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) in 1973. Soon after, founder and current president, Nonong Galvez served the board of National Directors of the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster ng Pilipinas twice in 1985 to 1987. Awarded by different organizations for his vast achievements and contribution to the community development, Nonong Galvez was given the highest form of recognition by the city government of Cabanatuan City in February 3, 2002 - the GAWAD A.N.A.K. or Ang Natatanging Mamamayang Kabanatuan (Mamamayan) sa larangan ng Pangangasiwa ng Negosyo: Mga Himpilan ng Radyo (Outstanding Community Member of Cabanatuan City in the field of Business Management, for putting up radio stations). Though it was hard to compete with Manila radio stations in the 70's, he was able to earn the loyalty of the local community, making the VRN stations in Cabanatuan City the most popular stations in the area.
