A year later the same owners bought WOAI (AM) in San Antonio, and owing to WOAI operating as a class I (now class A) named their company Clear Channel Communications. In the late seventies SBC and Clear Channel were merged into a new Clear Channel, which went on to own more than 1,000 radio radio stations.

Previously WOAI-FM, the station adopted the KAJA calls and current format in 1981. They are also one of two Country music FMs in the San Antonio market, the other being rival KCYY, whom they have competed with since 1987.

On October 18, 2010 it was announced that they won a 2010 CMA Radio Station of the Year - Large market. They will accept the award at the show in November.
