WNOK is a CHR radio station licensed to Columbia, South Carolina and serves the Columbia, South Carolina market. The Clear Channel Communications outlet is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to broadcast at 104.7 MHz with an ERP of 90 kW. The station goes by the name 104.7 WNOK and its current slogan is "All The Hits."WNOK-FM signed on the air July 15, 1959, simulcasting much of WNOK-AM's programming which consisted of Pop Standards. During the 1960s, WNOK-FM broke off simulcasting when WNOK-AM went Top 40 and went to the Beautiful Music format. Both stations were sister stations of WNOK-TV, channel 69, which is now WLTX-TV, channel 19. In the early 1960s, WNOK-FM broadcast commercial background music on an SCA subcarrier channel with a subcarrier frequency of 23 kHz. This prevented the station from broadcasting stereo because the SCA subchannel occupied part of the frequency band for a stereo signal. In November of 1963, WNOK-FM interrupted its background music service to announce that President John Kennedy had been shot in Dallas, Texas. The announcement was heard in department stores and offices throughout the Columbia area. Beginning in the mid-1970s, the station gradually became more contemporary with something of an Adult Contemporary format. The Station went full blown Top 40 in December 1976 as "Stereo 105" and was largely automated. This move proved to be a wise decision as the station enjoyed huge ratings for the remainder of the 1970s and into the 1980s.By 1980, the automation was done away with, replaced with a live airstaff and the station's name became simply "105 WNOK". By early 1984, the station became "104.7 WNOK", which became the first station in Columbia to adopt their digital frequency as part of their name. The station is owned by Clear Channel Communications, which also owns Country WCOS-FM, Urban WXBT, Variety Hits WLTY, News/Talk WVOC, and Sports/Talk WCOS in the Columbia radio market.
