WKPX 88.5 FM is a non-commercial, educational radio station owned and operated by the Broward District School Board and is located at Piper High School in Sunrise, Florida. The station broadcasts with the talent of Piper High students, school days from 7:30 am to 6 pm. After hours, broadcast students from Nova Southeastern University man the station, under the name Radio X.The music format on WKPX was originally Top 40, but they altered their format in the late 80's to primarily Techno, Alternative and Punk rock, among a wide variety of genres. In 2002 WKPX went to an Audiovault system, in which the DJ portions were pre-recorded in advance, and the music is played from a computer. The station also changed its music focus to the more popular Alternative and Punk formats.Programming on WKPX included Not Real, which focused on alternative rock with comedy; and Halon 121, a Heavy Metal program, billed as the longest running show in WKPX's history (1982–2003).However, during 2005–2007 WKPX showcased its most popular show "Breakfast with Frankenstein" which has gained a cult following. It's mix of punk, alternative, and comdedic sketches made it WKPX's most celebrated specialty show to this day.During the same time, the station was also recognized for their highly popular weekend hip-hop programs which included: Sichop and later The Asylum which were both headed originally by Sydney Crawford, Curtis Steele, and Gerald Dagher. After two sets of graduating classes, and the loss of their popular on-air personalities, WKPX saw a decrease in its hip-hop listeners.More recently, there were variety shows hosted by the Music Directors of each corresponding year:2007-08 - Noise Pollution (Susan)2008-09 - Special Delivery (Thayne)2009-10 - Noise Pollution (Sijun)The format of WKPX still consists of anything from punk to alternative. Listners can requests songs at the station's request line.
