Bayrak Radio was established on the 25th of December 1963 to voice the cause of the Turkish Cypriot people following its exclusion by Greek Cypriots from the 1960 Partnership Cyprus Republic.
Radio Bayrak, put together with a few homemade electrical equipment started transmitting within a limited radius of 2.5 km from a small garage in the back yard of a house.
On the 24th of February 1964, Radio Bayrak’s transmission could be listened to from across the whole island.
Despite its limited means, Radio Bayrak continued to voice the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence in the face of the Greek Cypriot attacks which reached its most violent peak in 1974.
Following the Peace Operation in 1974, Bayrak Radio was restructured into a corporation, launching its first television broadcast in 1976.
Carrying out its first black and white broadcast on the 19th of July 1976 with studio equipment dismantled and brought in from Diyarbakir, Turkey, Bayrak Radio took on its current institutional identity Bayrak Radio and Television.
4th of December 1977, BRTK (Bayrak Radio and Television) starts its first FM broadcasts.
1st of July 1979, the corporation airs its first colour broadcast.
6th of July 1979, a first powerful broadcast link is established between Lefkosa and Ankara.
With the declaration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 1983, Bayrak Radio which had powered its first broadcasts with a car battery became an autonomous corporation administered with its own statuette.
BRT has come a long way since 1987 when it started airing its transmissions through its own transmitters for the first time.
Today the BRTK Corporation has become a strong and proud institution which transmits on two television channels and 5 radio channels.
In addition to the Turkish language BRT 1 and the mainly English language BRT 2 Television channels, one can choose to listen to any of the 5 radio stations: Bayrak Radio, Bayrak FM, Baryak International, Bayrak Classic FM and Bayrak Turkish Music.
BRT which continues to progress in all areas, launched its website in 1997.
BRT’s television and radio transmissions which can be watched and listened to on the internet serve to carry the voice and image of the Turkish Cypriot people to the rest of the world.
In addition to the internet, BRT 1 TV, Bayrak Radio and Bayrak International which can be watched and listened by Turkish Cypriot and foreign viewers living abroad through satellite is proud to be able to reach out to Turkey, the Middle East as well as Europe.
Undergoing complete renewal, radio studios air programs and music through computerized automation systems, bringing radio broadcasting at the corporation to 21st century standards.
Bayrak Radio, Bayrak International and Bayrak FM is proud to provide 24 hour uninterrupted broadcasting services.
