Dublin City fm first broadcast as Anna Livia fm from a room in a Capel Street building belonging to Dublin City Corporation. It all started when it was awarded a 2 week licence during the celebrations of Dublin’s first 1000 years. Run by a group of people headed by radio enthusiast Fergus Lynch it quickly became very popular for its mix of programmes which were varied. Many personalities from the world of entertainment, journalism and politics hosted their own half hour and one hour programmes. Nell McCafferty’s programme comes to mind as one of the funniest of its kind with “sisters doing it for themselves”

The group then looked for a longer licence and was awarded one in 1992. It moved to Grafton Street in the heart of Dublin’s main shopping belt where it stayed for several years. Several innovative programmes were broadcast from here including the Beatles Anniversary show from the roof of the building with a tribute band playing live. There was a very popular two-hour Saturday show which promoted Irish bands and groups and the station broadcast live coverage of the Dublin City Marathon and many other programmes which were ahead of their time.

Several well known names have started their journalistic careers in the station including Paul Byrne (film critic with the Evening Herald), Declan Carty (Newstalk), Luke Clancy (presenter of several programmes on RTE), Conor Faughnan (AA), Robert Fogarty (producer/presenter with 98FM), Jack Gilligan (City arts officer for Dublin), Brian Lally (RTE), Kevin Rafter (Sunday Tribune) and Susan Shannon (presenter on Galway Bay FM.).

The station has moved premises over the past 16 years, from Grafton Street to Griffith College to Liffey Trust but we have now settled in our new location in the Docklands Innovation Park for the last few years. In 2001, Anna Livia fm was renamed Dublin City Anna Livia to reflect our link with Dublin City Council. However this year the station decided to rebrand by renaming it Dublin City fm.

This change in name reflected the changing face of Dublin city and its multi-cultural, multi-ethnic citizens. The station is growing stronger with each passing year and is highly regarded for its format. Dublin City fm is the only special interest arts and cultural radio station in Ireland.

In association with Dublin City Council, Dublin City fm broadcasts the only interactive traffic information service every weekday morning (7-10) and evening (4-7) on its Live Drive programme from the Traffic Control Centre in the city.Through the use of the Council’s traffic monitoring network, broadcasters monitor and analyse over 170 cameras around the city and advise listeners on the flow of traffic to help them avoid unneccessary delays on their journey.

Along with our partners Dublin Docklands Development Authority, the station produces and broadcasts ‘Sound School’. The programme involves secondary schools in the Docklands catchment area presenting their own show over the course of the school year. Last year they showcased a ‘live’ one hour programme, guests included Dublin football manager Paul Caffrey.

The station broadcasts on 103.2 seven days a week from 07:00 - 02:00. Programmes include: current affairs, documentaries, Dublin issues, the arts, literature, business, health, media matters, sport, nature, leisure activities, women’s topics, special interests, Irish and world music.
